University of Colorado law professor Violeta Chapin speaks during a rally in support of DACA recipients on Sept. 5, 2017, in Longmont.

As a retired teacher from a diverse Cherry Creek school, I have taught many DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) children. Overwhelmingly, they are hard-working, serious students. As a society, we have rightly invested public resources into these children who know no other homeland. All have invested their lives into pursuing the American dream and have gone on to either college or responsible, critical jobs in our economy. To split up millions of families through mass deportations of contributing members of our society is not only short-sighted but morally wrong.

We have neighbors who have other types of “DACA” children in their households: Deadbeat Adult Children of America. They grew up here, failed to take advantage of all the opportunities presented to them and still cannot hold down jobs and therefore pay no taxes. If the Republicans want to have a more robust society, they should deport these deadbeats instead of truly hard-working children who appreciate the chances they’ve been given.
