Re: “Trump axes Tillerson via Twitter, names CIA’s Pompeo chief U.S. Diplomat,” March 13 news story.
Once again, Donald Trump has acted like the reality show “star” he is, this time by firing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Tillerson was a voice of sanity amid the cacophony of Trumpian tweets on foreign policy and international trade. Firing him and replacing him with a “yes man,” someone who sees things the way Trump does, should frighten everyone.
Tillerson pointed out that we’re not ready for a presidential-level meeting between North Korea and the U.S.A. — and he’s right. Presidential summits should only happen after a lot of homework has been done — which means that lower-level diplomats and experts have had a chance to develop a meaningful agreement.
The mental picture of Trump extemporizing with Kim Jong Un is unsettling, to say the least. When Trump shoots from the hip, as he does almost daily via his tweets, he exhibits his ignorance about crucial facts. North Korea will use him to embarrass the United States.
