A female mountain lion found dead in Nederland last month succumbed to old age, officials said.

The mountain lion, which had attacked a dog in early March, was found by hikers on March 14 near Middle Boulder Creek close to the intersection of West Breed and South Caribou streets.

The lion was sent to a laboratory in Fort Collins for a necropsy, which found no traumatic injuries or anything suspicious.

“The lion just had some indications that it basically died of old age,” said Kristin Cannon, a Colorado Parks & Wildlife district wildlife manager. “Its organs weren’t functioning very efficiently, and its heart looked like it was giving out.”

Cannon said the mountain lion was estimated to be about 13 years old, which Cannon said is old for such an animal. The necropsy did not find any diseases in the animal.
