Former Sedgwick County Sheriff Thomas “TJ” Hanna on Tuesday was acquitted of the most serious charges against him related to allegations that he had sex with an inmate.

But a Logan County jury convicted Hanna on a misdemeanor charge of official misconduct related to putting the woman in his vehicle and driving her to his home.

The conviction means Hanna, 45, can no longer be a law enforcement officer in Colorado.

Hanna, 45, was acquitted of sexual assault on an at-risk person, second-degree kidnapping and soliciting a prostitute.

Hanna took the inmate to his home in August 2016, according to a news release by Vikki Migoya, spokeswoman for 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler.

By statute the conviction will result in revocation of his Colorado peace officer certification, Migoya said.

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office was appointed special prosecutor and attorneys from Brauchler’s office prosecuted the case in Sterling.

Hanna will be sentenced on July 11.
