Dime- to penny-sized hail is pounding metro Denver, covering streets and triggering minor flooding.

Hail has been reported in Wheat Ridge, Denver, Golden and Lakewood, said Russell Danielson, NWS meteorologist.

“There’s plenty of dime-sized hail coming down, covering roads. It’s causing very minor flooding in some locations as hail gets trapped in storm drains,” Danielson said. “The smaller hail can cause a little bit of damage.”

The best chance for more damaging hail — 1 inch in diameter — is in Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, he said.

Forecasters also aren’t ruling out tornadoes on the Eastern Plains as severe thunderstorms roll through the region.

Anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a half-inch of rain is possible in the Denver area on Monday, Danielson said.

“Some storms could be severe with large hail,” the NWS says.

The high temperature will be around 64 degrees. The chance of rain and thunderstorms will persist throughout the day.

On Tuesday, there’s a 40 percent chance of afternoon rain and thunderstorms. It will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature of around 69 degrees. The chance for rain and thunder will increase in the afternoon.

It will be much warmer Wednesday and Thursday under mostly sunny skies. The high temperature both days will be around 80 degrees. There’s a slight chance for rain and thunderstorms Thursday night.

Afternoon thunderstorms and rain showers are expected Friday, when the high temperature will be around 72 degrees. Rain will continue through Saturday, the NWS says.
