Getting your player ready...

I often get approached by people seeking advice on a career in the outdoors.  Most outdoor enthusiasts are passionate about their avocation and a full-time career in the outdoors would be their “dream job”.  I have been blessed being an outdoor writer for decades, including 22 seasons on television and 20 years on the radio.

I think a lot of people don’t pursue their dreams because they don’t believe they have the necessary qualifications or are unsure of the path to get there.

Corrine Service from Colorado Parks and Wildlife joined me on the radio Saturday to discuss current job postings for Park Manager/Ranger positions.  Service began her career as a white water rafting guide and is now a full-time employee of CPW in the areas of recruiting and training.

Among other positions, both full and part time, CPW has openings for between 15 and 20 Park Manager/Ranger trainees.  This posting will close June 8.  The minimum requirement for these positions is a four year college degree. A degree in fields like natural resources or outdoor recreation is an automatic qualifier.  In addition, any four-year degree combined with work experience in outdoor recreation can qualify.  That could include seasonal positions with CPW, working for many community or county park organizations and a host of other activities.  If an outdoor career is your dream, see if you qualify.  Even if you come up a little short this year, you may be able to get experience with a local park or organization or a seasonal or part-time job with CPW.

A bit of advice; if you are seeking an outdoor career, don’t look for an “outdoor job”, look for a career that involves the outdoors. The job part must come first.  My career involves the outdoors.  My work is the preparation and research, the writing and the business side of the media.  The fact that it is built around my passion for the outdoors makes it my dream job.  Don’t give up on pursuing yours.
