5A — After both Grandview and Broomfield fell in the Class 5A semifinals last season, it took no giant leap to believe the two powerhouse girls soccer programs — both buoyed by plenty of returning talent as well as a fire sparked by coming up just short of the title match — would play their way deep into the state tournament in 2018.

And when the programs did that, facing off for the championship Wednesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the result was a physical, back-and-forth instant classic won by Grandview 1-0 off sophomore midfielder Caylin Lyubenko’s golden goal less than four minutes into the first overtime.

4A — Windsor came out from the opening whistle of the Class 4A girls soccer championship Wednesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park with its foot on the gas, controlling possession and missing a few scoring opportunities early on.

And even when the Wizards finally did initially crack the Valor Christian defense via senior Chaynee Kingsbury’s breakaway goal at the 25 minute mark, the score only caused Windsor to accelerate even more en route to a dominating 4-1 victory and the program’s first state championship in the sport.
