Every year, Memorial Day gives Americans an opportunity to remember our fallen veterans and usher in the unofficial start to the summer. And for the last 40 years in Colorado, it also means it’s time for the Bolder Boulder.

From Monday’s races, Denver Post reporter John Meyer delves into the stories of several runners that tugs at the heart, from Kenya-born Aliphine Tuliamuk — who began her life in impoverished East Africa before getting a chance to run at Wichita State — to Cheryl McCarty, who was diagnosed with cancer only after she went to the doctors after last year’s race after experienced pain in her hips in last year’s race: “we believe that the Bolder Boulder saved my life.”

“Every year, stories like theirs and so many others, make each Bolder Boulder an additional volume of compelling stories told with heart, energy, courage and even love,” he writes.

Kenya-born American runner Sam Chelanga called the Bolder Boulder “probably my favorite race ever.” In the women’s elite race, Ethiopia’s .
