The emerald ash borer has been detected in Superior, the fifth community outside of Boulder where the destructive beetle has been found.

Boulder County foresters found a dead adult borer in a trap on public property along the Mayhoffer Singletree Trail near West Thomas and Third Avenue in Superior, according to a news release from the Colorado State Forest Service.

A response team then found numerous ash trees on private property in the city were exhibiting symptoms of emerald ash borer infestation.

It is not yet known if the borer was brought in by humans or if it spread to Superior naturally.

Since it was first discovered in Boulder in 2013, emerald ash borers have been found in Gunbarrel, Longmont, Lafayette, Lyons and now Superior.
