You wake up early, crawl out of your tent, and behold the layer of thick, white mist covering the water’s surface. The rising sun makes the moisture glow, and it’s already beginning to evaporate as you push off your canoe and float, weightless, over the unbroken surface of the water.
Such is the magic of lakeside campgrounds. At their best, they are isolated, quiet escapes, with trails around their circumference, and nobody but a few anglers and moose along their shores. At their worst, they are crowded, speedboat-choked playgrounds. Following are some of my favorite, most remote campgrounds. Most of them only allow wakeless boats and feature immediate access to nearby wilderness areas and national forests.
