Competitors took part in the 70th annual World Championship on Sunday in Fairplay, south of Breckenridge.

Each runner was required to stay attached to his or her donkey with a 15-foot lead, or rope, and the donkey had to carry 33 pounds in its pack. The runner was allowed to push, pull, drag or carry the burro, but was not allowed to ride it. A team was made up of one man or woman and one burro. The winning team had to cross the finish line together.

The race was split into two categories. The first was a 15-mile race and the second was a 29-mile journey to the top of Mosquito Pass and back to Fairplay. The pass tops out at an elevation of 13,185 ft.

This race was the first in a Triple Crown burro race series in Colorado. The second leg runs in Leadville on Aug. 5 and the third leg is in Buena Vista on Aug. 13.
