Re: “The cruelty to migrants grows,” Sept. 20 editorial
This country has an abundance of natural resources. It also benefited from the historical influx of new blood, new energy, from migrants from all around the world yearning to begin their lives anew. They gave a new momentum to the pursuit of the American dream. Denying immigrants, who are attempting to flee poverty and violence, access to this country, diminishes the dream. For all of us.

Come on, Rockies, wake up!
Approaching the playoffs with just 16 games left in the season and the Rox went 1-5 in their first six games. Worse yet, they averaged a wimpy 1.5 runs per game. Their pitching has been solid (except for Gray on one occasion), but their lumber has already gone on vacation. Their hits with runners in scoring position has been like 3 for a kajillion. As they enter the final 10 games of the season, there is still a pulse — but barely. Come on guys, wake up. Make us, and yourselves proud.

Time to make a call for better gun laws
We have had far too many moments of silence since Sandy Hook. Our children and community deserve real action to stop the epidemic of gun violence in our country. We’re not alone and we’re not helpless. There are many seemingly simple, yet powerful things we can do today.
More and more of our neighbors are uniting to bring the change we need. The phones in Congress are ringing off the hook with calls for common-sense gun reform, peaceful rallies are growing in numbers in cities across the country, and families and friends are gathering together in their own living rooms to talk about bringing violence prevention programs to their schools. The movement is growing and we must keep growing it.
There is reason to have hope that we can prevent gun violence before it happens through sensible gun safety laws and programs in our schools and communities that help us identify the signs and signals before a shooting happens and intervene.
To keep this hope alive and bring the change we need, I am asking everyone to take two simple actions today. First, call your member of Congress today and ask that he or she support gun violence prevention legislation to keep guns out of dangerous hands. Secondly, make the promise at www.sandyhookpromise.org and help bring Sandy Hook Promise’s no-cost, violence prevention programs to our schools and community.

Serena should have kept her cool like the Buffalos did
On a recent Saturday, while Serena Williams was playing Naomi Osaka in the U.S. Open women’s tennis final, the Colorado Buffalos football team was in Lincoln, Neb., playing the Cornhuskers in a rivalry game.
In Lincoln, one can expect that the game officiating might slant a bit toward the Cornhuskers, given a crowd of 89,853, with few routing for the Buffalos. As a biased observer, I clearly perceived a slant early in the game.
How did the Buff collegians react? No complaining. No whining. Just get lined up for the next play. What class, top to bottom, exhibited by the players and coaches. And in the end they amazingly prevailed through their concerted, focused efforts.
As has been well-reported, Serena reacted quite differently to a bit of adversity.
She was clearly outplayed by the victorious Osaka, whose brilliant first grand slam win got overshadowed by Serena’s whining. The contrast between Serena and the Buffs in the face of some adversity could not be more stark.
