Professional baseball is staying in Colorado Springs.

Even though the Colorado Springs Sky Sox’s run as a Triple-A affiliate saw its final out Sept. 3 when they lost a doubleheader to the Oklahoma City Dodgers to end the season, they’ll move forward as part of the Pioneer League.

The Milwaukee Brewers, who the Sky Sox have been an affiliate of the past four seasons, announced Wednesday that Colorado Springs is its new rookie league team. Beginning in the 2019 season, Colorado Springs will begin competition in the Pioneer League as the Brewers transport their affiliate from Helena, Mont. The agreement runs through 2020.

Though rookie ball is the lowest on the professional totem pole and often doesn’t draw wide interest, it’s worth noting that Colorado’s two minor league teams will soon be playing at the same level. Already part of the Pioneer League south division are the Grand Junction Rockies, rookie affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, and bringing in Colorado Springs creates a natural rivalry. That being said, a bus ride to Colorado Springs from the Grand Junction takes more than 5 hours — the Rockies other divisional opponents are across the border in Utah in Ogden (4 hours, 55 minutes) and Orem (3 hours, 51 minutes).
