The Broncos placed punter Marquette King on injured reserve Saturday and promoted punter Colby Wadman before leaving Denver for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

King missed all three days of practice this week with a thigh injury. A source said the Broncos intend to release King once he is healthy.

Wadman, signed to the practice squad on Sept. 26, will make his NFL regular season debut against the Jets.

King averaged 39.7 yards net in four games, 20th in the NFL. He had poor punts in terms of distance and hang time in losses to Baltimore and Kansas City, earning public criticism from coach Vance Joseph.

King was signed to a two-year contract days after he was released by the Oakland Raiders during the off-season. King averaged 42.7 net yards last year for the Raiders, fourth-best in the league.

Giving up on King is another blow to a series of offseason additions by general manager John Elway. Defensive lineman Clinton McDonald was released after training camp, Right tackle Jared Veldheer and safety Su’a Cravens were acquired in trades, but Veldheer (knee) is out for the Jets game and Cravens underwent knee surgery in early September is on injured reserve. Veteran Tramaine Brock was signed to be the third cornerback, but is fourth on the depth chart and quarterback Case Keenum has six interceptions.
