Air Force waxed Johnson & Wales, Denver edged Maine and Colorado State posted 100 on Colorado Christian.
The first two days of the college basketball season for our state’s Division I programs make us throw up our arms and say, “Well … yeah.” Nothing we didn’t expect. But if there’s one takeaway, it’s this: Kendle Moore is a diaper dandy.
Yes, the Rams were playing CCU. And yeah, the Cougars were picked to finish 16th in the 16-team RMAC, but they did lose by only 3 at Wyoming last Thursday and when you’re playing an opponent that runs a Princeton offense, anything can happen. And what happened was the first of many great games to come from Moore.
Colorado State’s true freshman point guard put on a show at Moby Arena, scoring 26 points to accompany 4 rebounds and 4 assists (with two turnovers).
“I can’t stop smiling for him. That’s my guy right here,” CSU guard Anthony Bonner said of Moore, who exited in the second half to a standing ovation. “We hung out all summer, and he’s put the work in. We’ve got a lot of confidence in him. We know he’s going to bring it every day, every practice. It doesn’t surprise me. I’m real happy for him.”
And here’s the kicker: Come the Rams’ next game Saturday, there’s a good chance he’s coming off the bench. Starting point guard J.D. Paige will be back, and CSU, which only had three guards available Wednesday, will finally have a little depth.
Moore, who had 19 points in the exhibition against CSU-Pueblo and 15 in a closed scrimmage at DU, is one of Colorado’s rising names to keep an eye on this season. Here are a couple more:
Adam Thistlewood, freshman, CSU: 10 points, 5 rebounds vs. CCU.
Chris Joyce, sophomore, Air Force: 15 points (3 for 3 from 3-point range).
Ronnie Herrell Jr., senior transfer from Creighton, DU: 18 points, 13 rebounds.
Northern Colorado opens its season Friday against Colorado College and CU will have its first tipoff Tuesday by hosting Drake.
