Dressed in a polar bear costume, Clint Mills surveyed the shores of Boulder Reservoir on a chilly 7-degree day.

“In my professional polar bear opinion,” Mills said, “this is perfect plunging conditions.”

About 200 folks apparently had the same thought as Mills, as they braved the cold to ring in 2019 by running into the waters of Boulder Reservoir for the annual Polar Plunge.

Mills is actually from Texas, and he and a group of friends — all dressed in matching polar bear costumes — go to a different polar plunge around the country every New Year’s Day.

“We thought it would be a one-time thing,” Mills said. “But we keep getting new recruits.”
