A driver high on methamphetamine who hit and killed a motorcyclist in Brighton has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Brian Charles White, 34, was sentenced Friday after being convicted of vehicular homicide in October by an Adams County jury, according to the district attorney’s office.
On Aug. 12, 2017, White was driving a Chevrolet Suburban, a large SUV, over 65 mph south on U.S. 85 when the Chevy slammed into a motorcycle driven by 65-year-old David Brown.
Brown had been slowing for a traffic backup at East 120th Avenue when he was hit. The victim died at the scene.
White was convicted in October of vehicular homicide-DUI, reckless vehicular homicide and careless driving resulting in death. He had previous DUI and drug convictions in Pennsylvania, according to the DA.
Prior to the fatal crash, White was speeding and had driven more than 20 miles while high on methamphetamine, prosecutors said.
“Brian White put himself and his drug habit ahead of everything else,” said Deputy District Attorney Troy Moyer in the release.
Moyer described Brown as a model citizen.
“He was on his way to help a friend when he was struck and killed,” Moyer said. “He was a good, hardworking man who loved to ride his motorcycle on a Saturday afternoon.”
Adams County District Judge Tomee Crespin imposed the maximum 12-year sentence.
“This wasn’t an accident,” Crespin said at the sentencing. “It was a collision you caused because of your choices and actions that have devastated two families — your family as well as the Brown family. You chose to use methamphetamine and get into your vehicle. And you caused the collision which killed Mr. Brown.”
