Add Terrell Davis to the list of names rooting for Steve Atwater to earn a trip to Canton, Ohio.

On a , the Broncos’ Hall of Fame running back made a case for his former teammate to join him in the hall.

“People don’t realize his stats weren’t great in terms of interceptions … but he was more of a box safety,” Davis said. “He was what we called the ‘Smiling Assassin.’ He was the tone-setter. He made that defense for the Broncos, for so many years, the defense that it was.”

He added: “John Elway was the captain and leader on that offense, but Steve Atwater was the man on defense. He was the one that everything revolved around. And his play and the way he played in those games, our two Super Bowls, he was real instrumental in those games.”

Davis credited Atwater for helping develop him into the running back he became, noting that the veteran safety would give him tips during practice.

“I hope and I pray that Steve Atwater gets the call this year.”
