Ski Club Vail product River Radamus claimed his second gold medal in a week at the alpine world juniors championships Monday in Val di Fassa, Italy, winning the giant slalom by nearly a second after claiming the super-G title Thursday.

The annual FIS Junior World Championships is considered a major marker for developing talent, so his results have been big news for fans of U.S. ski racing. Radamus, who lives in Edwards, became only the second American to win multiple gold medals at one world juniors since Julia Mancuso took three golds in 2002, foreshadowing a career that would later include four Olympic medals and five world championships medals. Ryan Cochran-Siegle also took two gold medals in 2012.

Radamus, who turned 21 early this month, was born in Steamboat Springs, the son of ski coaches. His father coached for the U.S. Ski Team and later ran Ski & Snowboard Club Vail for 14 years as executive director. Radamus claimed silver in super-G at last year’s world championships and silver in the combined in 2017.

“The giant slalom title is the one I’ve really been craving,” Radamus said in a U.S. Ski Team news release. “I’ve been working on GS most this season, and I really wanted to have a strong showing here. This is a really tough field — there are a lot of good young guys right now —  so I knew it was going to be a fight and I had to send it as hard as I could. I really executed my line on both runs and feel really proud of it.”
