Baseball has changed for the better and worse over the years, and today’s game is considered new-school vs. old-school. I am a little more old-school with how it should be played.
Pitchers no longer throw inside, and they need to stop looking to the bullpen for help after five innings. Chase Utley and Buster Posey ruined contact plays at bases, and players no longer care to hit for average while striking out at an high rate. Look at the Rockies as a recent example: 24 K’s against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night, and they still got the win. Red Sox ace Chis Sale had 17 K’s against Colorado and got pulled after the seventh inning. Back in the good ol’ days, Sale would have gone back out to the mound to try to break the single-game strikeout record of 20.
A number of baseball purists long for old-school baseball — back when pitchers wanted to finish what they started and hitters were more worried about hitting for average instead of launch angles.
A favorite baseball stat that needs to be remembered is from the 1971 Baltimore Orioles’ starting rotation. They are the last team with a starting staff that had four 20-game winners: Dave McNally (21), Mike Cuellar (20), Pat Dobson (20) and Jim Palmer (20).
With all this history and looking back at the past, let’s take a trip down memory lane and enjoy a classic baseball song from 1981 with Terry Cashman’s
