Eight UCI women’s elite teams, including four in the top 20 of the UCI world rankings, will be sending racers to the Colorado Classic Aug. 22-25 as the tour is reinvented as a women’s only event.

The tour announced 16 teams have entered, including Canyon//Sram, a German team currently ranked fifth in the world. Other top 20 teams include Cogeas Mettler Look of Russia (14th), TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank of the U.S. (15th) and Swapit Agolico of Mexico (20th). Sho-Air Twenty20, No. 1 in the USA Cycling Pro Road Tour rankings, also will participate.

“It should be the deepest and most talented field that we’ve had in the women’s race,” said race director Sean Petty. “We have more international riders and teams coming from Europe, so we should see more depth than we’ve had in the last couple of years.”

The field will include riders from Mexico, Italy, Colombia, Chile, Russia, Uzbekistan, New Zealand, Switzerland, France, Finland, Cyprus and other countries. Rosters will be released later this summer.

This year’s Colorado Classic will be a four-stage race with stops in Steamboat Springs, Avon, Golden and Denver.
