If you thought Bike to Work Day was no big deal, think again.
An estimated 31,200 riders took part and rode nearly 549,000 miles, according to figures compiled by the Denver Regional Council of Governments, which organizes the region’s Bike to Work Day through a program called Way To Go. The organization estimated 237 tons of carbon dioxide emissions were avoided while 34.1 million calories were burned. The average one-way commute was 8.8 miles.
“We love seeing the excitement and the energy on the big day,” said Douglas W. Rex, DRCOG’s executive director, in a news release. “We hope people realize how easy it is, appreciate the benefits and continue to choose bike commuting more often.”
