An RTD light rail operator is being investigated for allegedly using a cellphone while operating an in-service train, a violation of policy because of safety concerns.

The allegation was reported to RTD on Thursday, and an investigation is underway, according to a news release.

“This is a clear infraction of our policy and completely unacceptable,” said Mike Meader, RTD’s chief safety officer. “The safety of our passengers is of the utmost importance to us and we take it very seriously.”

Rail and bus operators undergo an extensive training process, according to the release, which includes a variety of safety elements. The operator has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
