A box truck hauling paper caught fire Wednesday night on Interstate 70 in the eastbound portal of the Eisenhower Tunnel, shutting down the highway in both directions for a short time.

The fire is out, and the situation is “stabilized,” according to the State Patrol. Eastbound traffic is being held in Silverthorne. The fire was on the Summit County side of the tunnel.

Westbound lanes reopened after a short time and both eastbound lanes reopened by about 10:30 p.m.

U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass was offered as an alternate route while traffic was stopped.

There were no reports of injuries.
