SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Right-hander Daniel Bard, once a stellar piece of the Boston Red Sox bullpen, is attempting a comeback with the Rockies.

He signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league camp Friday. He joined the club at spring training and will begin work immediately. Bard, 34, once looked like a potential closer for the Red Sox until control issues wrecked his career.

The 28th overall pick in the 2006 draft made his big-league debut in 2009 and posted an impressive 2.88 ERA over 197 innings, averaging 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings. But then he began battling control issues and posted a 6.22 ERA in 2012. He last pitched in the majors in 2013 and in the minor leasgues n 2017.
