A winter weather advisory was issued Sunday for much of the Denver region ahead of a winter storm that’s expected to drop between two and six inches of snow on the city and suburbs Sunday evening.

The winter weather advisory begins at 5 p.m. and ends at 5 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service at Boulder, which warned that roads will be slippery and snowpacked Sunday night.

Rain showers earlier in the day are expected to morph into snow showers in the afternoon and evening in the Denver region as a cold front moves into the plains from the mountains.

The storm system should drop between three and nine inches of snow in the mountains Sunday before moving into the foothills and plains.

On Monday, snowfall will continue in the mountains, with another two inches possible. Light snowfall might also continue on the plains Monday morning, along with patches of fog before 11 a.m., according to the weather service.

Sunday’s high temperature is expected to be 51 degrees, while on Monday temperatures will reach the mid-40s. The rest of the week is expected to be dry and mild, temperatures are forecasted to hit the high 60s on Friday and Saturday.
