Five Denver police officers and one Aurora officer fired on an armed carjacking suspect in Aurora on Monday, killing the suspect, according to officials with the two police departments.
The incident began around 11 a.m. when the male suspect carjacked a Mercedes sedan and the sedan’s owner from the 4800 block of North Chambers Road. Denver police responded, and followed the vehicle to the intersection of East 35th Place and Abilene Street.
There, both the suspect — who was “fully masked ” — and the carjacking victim got out of the vehicle. The suspect was armed with a handgun and refused “loud verbal commands” to drop the weapon, Aurora police spokeswoman Crystal McCoy said.
“At some point he threatened the officers with the weapon and that is when the officers discharged their weapons,” Denver police Division Chief Ron Thomas said.
Five Denver officers and one Aurora officer shot at the suspect. Aurora police said in a statement that the suspect raised the gun toward officers.
The shooting occurred at about 11:20 a.m. The victim of the carjacking was not hurt, and no officers were injured. The male who died has not been publicly identified.
All of the uniformed officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras that were operating, McCoy said. The six officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, per their departments’ policies.
Officers from both Aurora and are on scene of an officer-involved shooting at 35/Sable.
