New photos taken Wednesday show picturesque Hanging Lake was undamaged by the Grizzly Creek fire but also provide a sense of just how close the fire came to the iconic scenic destination.
“Last night we flew over Hanging Lake and got a few more pictures,” David Boyd, public affairs officer for the White River National Forest, said in an email Thursday morning. “You can see where the fire burned above the lake. We know the fire burned through some of the lower trail, but we haven’t yet assessed how much it was impacted. We will share what we find out once we are able to do that.”
The fire, which began on Aug. 10 in Glenwood Canyon, has reached nearly 30,000 acres according to Thursday’s official incident report and is 4% contained.

While the trail may have been mostly spared by the fire, it’s closed indefinitely until officials determine it’s once again safe to hike.
