Reservations for wilderness backcountry camping permits in Rocky Mountain National Park ground to a halt again on Wednesday due to “technical issues” caused by high volume, park officials reported in a news release just 40 minutes after reservations began for the day.
It is yet to be determined when they will resume, but it won’t be on Wednesday.
Reservations for May through October were supposed to begin on March 1, but high volume that day quickly crashed the Pay.gov system. At first, park officials announced that , but later that day said reservations would be postponed until this past Monday. Four days later, the park announced to spread out volume on the server and make it more manageable. Permits for May and June went on sale Monday. Permits for July went on sale Wednesday, quickly overwhelming Pay.gov.
Reservations for August were scheduled to begin Friday. Reservations for September and October were to have gone on sale Sunday. Itap anyone’s guess what happens next.
“We continue to work with Pay.gov on this issue,” the park’s news release stated. “We plan to reinitiate the rollout and will not be taking reservations today. Later this week we will provide further information on how July, August, September and October wilderness backcountry overnight permit reservations will be implemented. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
