Aurora firefighters used ladders to rescue several people trapped in an apartment building fire Friday night, and dozens of residents were displaced because of damage to at least 31 units.

One person was taken to a hospital, and four adults were checked at the scene, said Aurora Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sherri-Jo Stowell. Firefighters responded about 8 p.m. to the report of a fire with several people trapped in a three-story building at 10693 E. Exposition Ave.

The incident was a three-alarm fire, meaning eight engines and all the department’s ladder trucks were dispatched. Stowell said the blaze was under control in about a half hour. Investigators are trying to determine what caused it.

Stowell said firefighters were able to get people out within minutes of arriving at the building. Red Cross spokeswoman Andrea Carlson said 74 residents were displaced.

The Red Cross is providing lodging, help with medical and mental health, food and any other emergency needs, Carlson said.

The opened an evacuation center at Highline Community Elementary School, 11000 E. Exposition Ave.
