University of Denver incoming freshman defenseman Shai Buium was selected by the Detroit Red Wings four picks into the second round (36th overall) of the NHL draft on Saturday.

Buium, 18, was ranked No. 20 by Central Scouting among North American skaters. The San Diego native was in Plymouth, Mich., on Saturday preparing for the U.S. World Junior Showcase. He is living in Denver this summer and training with his future teammates.

Three other players with DU ties were drafted Saturday. Incoming freshman defenseman Sean Behrens went to the Avalanche late in the second round (61st overall) and incoming freshman forward Carter Mazur was selected by the Red Wings early in the third round (70th). Also, 2022 unsigned recruit Samu Salminen went 68th to the Devils.

Behrens and Mazur are also Americans participating at the U.S. World Junior Showcase in Michigan.

The rostered Pioneers make up the first three DU players selected in the first three rounds of the same NHL draft.

DU now has 11 NHL draft picks rostered for 2021-22, including three from the Red Wings and three from the Lightning.
