A Colorado Springs police officer who shot a man, who police say was armed, has been identified.

Officer Jared Huston, who was been with the department since 2019, shot Austin Hood, 33, on Jan. 19, according to police.

The police shooting happened as officers were investigating a possible shot, or shots, fired at a patrol vehicle in the 4700 block of Harrier Ridge Drive, police said. Officers encountered Hood after a car chase and the suspect was shot.

Hood was treated at a local hospital and then arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault of a peace officer, felony menacing, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and a parole violation, according to an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Huston, who is assigned to the Sand Creek patrol, has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. A police shooting investigation by the sheriff’s office is ongoing.
