A man who attempted to stab a deputy in Clear Creek County on Friday night was shot dead by a deputy, the sheriff’s office said.
About 11:20 p.m. Friday deputies responded to the 600 block of Main Street in Silver Plume, to assist a motorist, according to a news release.
Deputies found a car, “which appeared to have been involved in an accident” with the driver inside it. The driver, who was armed with knife, was “argumentative and uncooperative” and would not come out, the sheriff’s office said.
Additional law enforcement officers arrived, and for more than an hour attempts were made to persuade the driver out of the vehicle. Deputies eventually broke a car window and removed a knife.
The man had a second knife and “armed himself with a rock” as well, according to the release. Deputies fired bean bags and a stun gun at the man in an attempt to end the situation.
“The suspect eventually tried to stab an officer and was shot,” according to the release, which was written by Undersheriff Bruce Snelling. The man died at the scene.
The deputy who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave pending a police shooting investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The man’s identity was not release pending notification of family.
