Crews contain brush fire near I-25 north of Wellington; highway reopens

Estimated 105 acres burned Saturday afternoon in northern Colorado

I-25 was fully reopened about 4:25 p.m. The Wellington Fire Protection District that the Nunn fire, which burned an estimated 105 acres about six miles north of Wellington, near the Wyoming state line, had been “knocked down” and was substantially extinguished by then.

Several agencies responded to the Nunn Fire, which did not damage any structures or result in any injuries, the fire district said.

“Thankfully firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, and the evacuation orders were cancelled,” a said.

The fire grew quickly in the early afternoon near I-25 mile marker 284, the State Patrol said.

About 2:30 p.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation closed the southbound side of I-25 at Exit 288, reporting that wildfire smoke was visible from the highway. It closed the northbound side soon after at Exit 281, closer to Wellington, but the northbound side was reopened about 4 p.m.

In , the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reported that the fire was burning an area bounded by County Road 7, interstate 25 and Ranch Horse and Rising Eagle roads. An earlier evacuation order for residents in that area shortly before 5 p.m.
