In Denver, concerns about climate change and loss of green spaces, along with their benefits of lowering temperatures and absorbing water, led to voter approval in 2017 of an initiative requiring developers to incorporate green roofs on new buildings larger than 25,000 square feet and on existing buildings when roofs were repaired or replaced.
