An 80-year-old Weld County resident has died from the West Nile virus, the first reported death from the virus in the county this year.
The man, who had been hospitalized, “died from neuroinvasive West Nile Virus,” the said in a news release.
“West Nile Virus symptoms can appear 2-14 days after an infection,” said Val Smith, communicable disease program manager with the county, in the release. “Although 80% of infected people do not develop symptoms, for some, initial symptoms can include fever plus headache, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, joint pain, weakness, and a rash. If a person develops symptoms after being bitten by mosquitoes, they should see a health care professional immediately.”
As of Thursday, 20 Weld County residents have tested positive for the virus this season.
Health officials remind residents to take measures against the mosquito-borne virus, which has no vaccine, including:
- Drain standing water around your home
- Limit outdoor activities around dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active
- Wear long sleeve shirts and pants outside
- Use insect repellants with DEET
Earlier this month, a 60-year-old Adams County resident died from the West Nile virus, the first reported death from the virus in Adams County this year.
