A driver going the wrong way on eastbound I-70 caused an accident that killed one person, injured four, and shut the highway down for several hours early Saturday morning, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

A 29-year-old driver in a black truck was headed westbound on the eastbound side of the highway near Kipling Avenue when he struck another truck with four adults around midnight Friday. The driver of that other vehicle was killed and three passengers, all relatives, were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The driver of the truck was also hospitalized due to serious injuries.

Police arriving on the scene described it as “chaotic” and immediately closed the highway, which remained closed until 6 a.m. Saturday. Investigators are treating the accident as a suspected DUI, according to Wheat Ridge Police.
