A suspect armed with a rifle who died in Hudson, as a police officer fired one shot at him, took his own life in the Wednesday incident along Interstate 76, investigators said.
On Wednesday investigators said that the suspect died in an exchange of gunfire with a Hudson officer, but an autopsy by the determined that the 26-year-old suspect took his own life, according to a news release.
“The Coroner has deemed that the suspectap injury is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said the Thursday news release from the 19th judicial Critical Incident Response Team.
The man who died was identified Friday as Collin Roberts, of Fort Collins, according to the coroner’s office.

The incident started at about 11:30 a.m., when deputies were sent to a Kersey home, in the 2400 block of Cottonwood Court, on a report of a couple, a man and a woman, who forcefully entered a residence and who were attempting to steal vehicles in the area, according to an earlier 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team news release. The team is investigating the police shooting.
As deputies were en route, a second 911 caller reported that the man was armed with a rifle and that he fired shots at a home.
The suspects fled the neighborhood and responding deputies spotted their vehicle and chased it, eventually heading west on I-76 and hitting speeds upward of 100 mph, the release said. At one point, one suspect pointed a rifle at pursuing police. Officers from surrounding agencies joined in the chase.
An officer with the , in a vehicle, bumped the suspect vehicle bringing it to a stop.
“The male suspect then fired one round while a Hudson Police officer simultaneously fired one round,” the release said. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The female suspect was not identified and the news release did not disclose what happened to her after the suspect vehicle was stopped.
“The incident is under control and there is no safety risk to the public,” the sheriff’s office said Wednesday afternoon.
The at 1:47 p.m. Wednesday tweeted that I-76 was closed in both directions at Colorado 52 in Hudson by a crash.
