A fire under an Interstate 70 overpass forced authorities to shut down the westbound lanes at Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada for several hours Sunday afternoon, according to police.

The highway , according to a tweet from Arvada police.

The fire was reported at 2:19 p.m. under the bridge at Clear Creek, according to police and Arvada Fire. Firefighters put the blaze out quickly, but it still burned an about 20-foot by 50-foot area, the fire department said in a statement.

The westbound lanes were shut down around 3 p.m. and westbound traffic was directed to exit at Wadsworth Boulevard, which is Exit 269A.

The bridge was to be inspected for structural integrity before the interstate could reopen, police said.

No one was hurt in the fire, which Arvada Fire said “appears to have started by open burning.”
