The driver of a truck struck and killed a child in a Commerce City parking lot Thursday night in what appears to be an accident, police said.
The fatality occurred about 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a motel parking lot in the 7700 block of Highway 2, Commerce City police Cmdr. Dennis Flynn said.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators after the incident, Flynn said. There is no evidence that speed or intoxication were a factor in the crash and there have been no criminal charges filed against the driver, Flynn said.
“It seems right now to just be a terrible, terrible accident,” he said.
The driver had just turned on the truck and started driving when they struck the child, Flynn said.
The child was younger than 5 years old, Flynn said. The identity of the child will be released by the coroner.
