A section of Interstate 70 in the foothills, along with a stretch of U.S. 40 in the same area, has reopened in both directions after loose rock above the highway, considered a threat to dislodge, was removed.
The highway was closed, including Floyd Hill, from U.S. 6 to Jefferson County Road 65, according to the Colorado State Patrol. A section of U.S. 40 was closed in the same area.
Rock blasting as part of the I-70 Floyd Hill Project occurred at about 2 p.m., said Presley Fowler, a CDOT spokesperson. The stretch of I-70 reopened at about 2:20 p.m., but was then closed a second time as crews spotted a “slab of loose rock” after the blast.
The state patrol announced on Twitter, at 4:43 p.m., that the highways, both I-70 and U.S. 40, are reopen.
