Westbound Interstate 70 is reopened near Eagle after a 20-foot sinkhole opened on the highway shoulder, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The sinkhole was spotted at 5 a.m. by a CDOT maintenance worker and one lane of the highway was closed as a safety precaution, spokesperson Elise Thatcher said in an email.

Crews observed the sinkhole growing this morning and worked to open the hole, inspect it and dig approximately eight feet down to solid ground, Thatcher said.

The sinkhole was contained as of 2 p.m. and crews are working to backfill it with soil. No water was found in the soil and the hole was dry, Thatcher said.

The highway reopened just before 4 p.m.

U.S. 6 is also closed in both directions between I-70 and east of Keystone Resort for safety concerns, according to CDOT. Hazmat vehicles should stage at Eisenhower Tunnel and will run at the top of the hour as traffic allows, according to the agency.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
