The Boulder Public Library District is testing a vape detection device this month at its flagship library branch at 1001 Arapahoe Ave.

of the library district Board of Trustees said a HALO Smart Sensor system would be installed in a public restroom at the main library branch to, “monitor behavior that violates library policy.”

The system helps capture information about health and safety inside buildings by detecting vapors, chemicals, carbon dioxide displacement, movement and tampering. Boulder government officials and local schools have used the device in some spaces as well.

The library district has installed the system at the main library and may also add one at the new . The same system could eventually be rolled out at restrooms in other library branches.

Library district director David Farnan expressed hopes that there will no longer be a need for a security team to monitor restrooms at the main library, according to the April meeting minutes.

Reached for comment, Farnan said in an email that the installation of the device was not directly triggered by the at the main library branch in late 2022. However, he said many public bathrooms around downtown closed down around that time, and he believes it is “critical to be vigilant” to prevent the contamination from happening again.

“As was stated at that time, we are attempting to do everything we can to ensure a safe environment for everyone,” Farnan said.

There is no timeline yet for rolling out HALO devices at other library branches, he said.
