A man who reportedly fired a handgun on Flagstaff Road Monday morning took his own life after negotiating with Boulder police.

According to a release, despite hours of negotiation and exhaustive efforts to resolve the situation peacefully, the subject took his own life. The scene remains active pending additional investigation.

At 10:26 a.m., the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a call from two individuals in the parking lot located in the 2100 block of Flagstaff Road, according to the release.

Deputies were dispatched regarding a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot, acting erratically, with one of the reported parties hiding in the bathroom. According to the release, they reported hearing a single gunshot.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Boulder Police Department and the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks rangers responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they made contact with a man in a vehicle who was armed with a handgun.

The man’s vehicle was blocked using a “pinch” technique to prevent the vehicle from leaving and containment of the incident was established, according to the release. Boulder SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team, with a co-responder component, were then activated and responded. Negotiators then established communication with the man in an effort to negotiate a peaceful surrender.

Due to the incident, there is a hard closure of both lanes of traffic at the base of Flagstaff Mountain through the 2200 block of Flagstaff Road, according to BCSO spokesman Vinnie Montez. All trails on Flagstaff Mountain are closed.

Montez also said there are no known injuries from the shot that was fired.

To reach Flagstaff Road above the incident, alternate access is advised via Colo. 72 to Gross Dam Road. According to a release, Denver Water is only allowing residents to go in and out of the closure area of Gross Dam Road. City officials request that residents bring an I.D. to prove residency.
