One lane of eastbound Interstate 70 reopened Friday afternoon in Eagle County after an early morning crash involving two semitrailers shut down the interstate, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Eight hours after the initial crash — which happened around 4:30 a.m. Friday — one lane of eastbound I-70 reopened, State Patrol officials said in a 12:32 p.m. update. There is still no estimated time for a full reopening.
One semitrailer was driving westbound on I-70 early Friday morning when it crashed through the left shoulder barrier and into the eastbound lanes, where it collided with another semitrailer, according to a news release from Colorado State Patrol.
Paramedics took two people in the eastbound semitrailer to the hospital in unknown condition, according to the release. The westbound driver was not injured.
Investigators suspect fatigue as a factor in the crash but are still investigating all possible causes, State Patrol officials said in the release.
Troopers responded to reports of a mult-semi crash around 4:30 a.m. Friday, the release stated.
Around 5:02 a.m., the interstate was closed between Exit 163 for Edwards and Exit 167 for Avon.
Drivers can avoid the partial closure by exiting eastbound I-70 at Edwards, and reentering I-70 at Avon, according to a CDOT detour.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
