Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park will close to cars for the season starting next Tuesday, park officials said.

During fall and winter, the road’s scenic drive becomes a walking trail that is temporarily accessible to bicyclists and pets.

Old Fall River Road will be closed for all uses on Thursday, Oct. 10 and between Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Friday, Oct. 18 for road maintenance, according to a news release from Rocky Mountain National Park.

Bikes, leashed pets and hikers will be able to access the road:

  • Before Thursday, Oct. 10;
  • Between Friday, Oct. 11 and Monday, Oct. 14;
  • Between Saturday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Nov. 30;

Leashed pets and bicycles are only allowed on the road, not on side trails, park officials said.

On Dec. 1, Old Fall River Road will revert to full trail status, meaning bicycles and leashed pets will no longer be allowed on the road until it reopens next year.

While the road is well-maintained and safe, it usually doesn’t open until early July to give time for the snow to melt and for the park service to repair the road prior to opening it to the public.
