Greeley police say an officer “accidentally discharged his firearm” while taking a suspect into custody in west Greeley on Monday.
Both the officer and the suspect sustained minor injuries from debris, . Both the officer and the suspect were medically cleared on scene and did not need to be taken to a hospital, department spokesperson Kristen Duus said in a follow-up email.
The department was conducting an investigation in the 2000 block of Talon Parkway when the officer discharged his firearm, the post states. The suspect has since been booked into and released from the Weld County Jail, according to county arrest records.
“This matter is currently under active investigation,” the department wrote in the post. “We take this matter very seriously, and a thorough review will be conducted to address any issues identified to avoid incidents like this in the future.”
The officer has “returned to normal duty in accordance with department protocols,” while the department continues the investigation, according to Duus’s email.
