Ground delay at Denver International Airport derails hundreds of flights

More than 900 flights are delayed or canceled amid severe thunderstorms

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a at Denver International Airport on Wednesday for thunderstorms, preventing hundreds of flights from leaving the gate on time, according to the agency.

Severe thunderstorms brought high winds, rain and hail to the Interstate 25 corridor, including Denver and DIA, on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Flights in and out of DIA are seeing average delays of nearly 90 minutes, .

At 5:30 p.m., 906 flights were delayed and 23 were canceled, according to flight tracking data from .

United had delayed the most flights at 322, followed by 202 Southwest flights, according to FlightAware. SkyWest reported 165 delayed flights.

SkyWest also canceled 12 flights.
