
Two people were killed after a car drove off of Red Mountain Pass and rolled 320 feet down the mountain, landing upside-down in a creek on Tuesday morning, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The crash on U.S. 550 south of Ouray happened around 8 a.m. when a Honda Civic drove off the shoulder and rolled down the mountain, officials said in a news release.
The area is near mile marker 88 on the , about six miles south of Ouray.
Two adults died at the scene and a girl was trapped inside the Civic until emergency crews were able to rescue her at 11:30 a.m., the state patrol said.
She was taken to the hospital but state officials did not provide additional information about her injuries.
Southbound U.S. 550 is closed for an “extended period” for the investigation, and traffic will alternate through the northbound lane. People traveling between Ouray and Silverton should take alternate routes, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The closure is from Forest Service Road 886 to Ampitheatre Road, officials said.
