United Airlines flights at Denver International Airport and other major American airports were grounded Wednesday night because of a system outage, airline officials said.
Flights departing DIA for Newark International Airport in New Jersey, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Chicago O’Hare International Airport and San Francisco International Airport were on a ground stop for several hours, according to the .
The ground stop was lifted shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, United officials said in a statement.
“We are working with customers to get them to their destinations after a technology disruption on Wednesday evening,” officials stated. “The underlying technology issue has been resolved, and, while we expect residual delays, our team is working to restore our normal operations.”
United held “mainline flights” at their departing airports because of an issue with their flight information system, Unimatic.
That system houses information about each flight that is then fed to other systems, including those that calculate weight and balance and track flight times.
The outage started at about 4:12 p.m. in Denver and continued for several hours. Residual delays and cancellations stacked up after the initial outage was resolved.
There were 270 delays and 61 canceled United flights at DIA on Wednesday, according to the flight tracking website .
